Where to Meet

DIRECTIONS TO OUR BOATHOUSE:

  • The Wasabi Paddling Club boathouse is located at 1515 SE Water Ave. Our boathouse is in the back of the building. To access via car, continue past the building, turn right into the parking lot immediately before the big OMSI sign, follow the road around and through the stop sign. The boathouse entrance is just to the left of the outdoor stairway. 

    Nehalem Bay Location: Our dock is located on H St. before it becomes 6th St. There is parking and there are restrooms 3 blocks away but there are no showers available. 

 

 

What to Expect

 

  • For your first practice, please arrive 30 minutes prior to practice time 
  • After your first practice, plan to meet 15 minutes prior to practice time for warm ups
  • You will receive great instruction on the stroke before and during practice, as well as the basics of paddling and tips to keep in mind throughout practice!
  • You will have experienced paddlers either in front, behind, or next to you, just try to follow them as much as possible! Do not worry about how much power you have in your stroke, just focus on your timing!
  • Don’t worry about splashing; it is a water sport after all!
  • Practice will last about an hour. 
  • Halfway through practice we switch sides to build muscles symmetrically. There will also be rest periods to get water while getting instruction.
  • Don’t worry if you get tired and need to rest during some of the long paddling periods. When you are new, it is ok; it will take some time to build muscle and endurance. Try your best, but please don’t hurt yourself!

 

What to Wear

 

  • Water resistant clothing
  • Anything but cotton!
  • Try to choose wicking, breathable, or gore-tex. Expect to get wet, after all you are paddling in the water!
  • If it is cold, try to layer, you will generate heat.
  • For your feet, expect to get wet, old sneakers or sandals work well.

 

What to Bring

 

  • WATER!!!

 

What you do NOT need

 

  • A PFD or Paddle, we have some available for use at the dock
  • Full stomach! Eat light, you will be rotating a lot from your core and a full stomach makes it harder
  • Experience
  • *If you decide to purchase a paddle or vest after a few practices PFD vests and dragon boat paddles are available at Next Adventure  Address: 624 Southeast 7th Avenue, Portland, OR 97214, Phone:(503) 233-0706 or at Alder Creek Kayak at 1515 SE Water Street.  They usually have the Grey Owl wood paddles and a smaller selection of vests etc.
  • If you buy a wood paddle, the paddle will come at full length (51 inches) and will need to be cut down. In general Paddles of Fury uses a slightly longer paddle than is typically suggested by other dragon boat teams and since it's important for proper execution of our stroke, you'll want to get the length correct.
